Sending a Package?
 Some important information for you:
Lessons Learned:
• United States Postal Service Regular Air Mail: expect four to eight weeks to arrive, although the signs at the post office say three to four weeks, these guidelines do not apply once the package has left the States.
• United States Postal Service By Boat: expect three to eight months to arrive
• If you are sending something through Regular Air Mail to arrive for a birthday or special holiday it is good to mail two months before the special date. For example to arrive by Christmas packages should be sent by the middle of October.
• Two other mailing options are United States Postal Service Express Mail and DHL. In our experience these options have been fast, reliable however very expensive.
What to send:
• It is best not to send anything too valuable or expensive.
• We assume this does not need to be said, but do not send any weapons of any kind, or anything that might resemble a weapon.

Assembling the package:
• Place any items that might spill, leak, or melt in zip-loc bags. This will protect the package contents and we all love receiving new zip-locs!
• If possible place the most valuable items (DVD's, CD's, etc.) toward the bottom of the package.
• Remove any excess or bulky packaging from items
• If you are sending small items, use a protective envelope instead of a box
• Create multiple smaller packages instead of sending one extremely heavy or large package
• When sending computer programs or software make sure to include ID numbers, serial numbers, and/or instructions especially if the programs are removed from their original packaging.
If possible remove product wrapping, tags and stickers so that the items don't look new.

• When filling out the customs form, mark the checkbox and/or write in “gift” or “personal items”. If you give any additional information be as vague as possible about the exact contents of the package. Particularly refrain from writing things like “DVD”, “CD”, “mouth-watering American candies and snack foods”, etc. Too much information on the outside of a package could be a bit tempting for customs officials.
When declaring the value of the package use the “garage sale value”. For example if you sold everything in the package at a garage sale what would the value of the package be.
Cost:
• If you would like to find out how much mailing a package to Mozambique would cost, the post office has a great link on their website ( http://ircalc.usps.gov/) where you can enter in the weight of a package, the speed of mail service you would like to use and the country you are shipping to and find out exactly how much shipping the package will cost.
We do not recommend sending packages by boat (sometimes called sending by “surface”), as it can take six months or longer, and often doesn't ever arrive!
