Alan and Rachel met at Harding University where Alan received degrees in Bible & Religion and also Business and Marketing, and Rachel received her degree in Nursing. After they married in 2000, they served in campus ministry together while Rachel worked as an RN in a pediatric ICU and Alan began graduate school at Harding School of Theology. They lived with their sponsoring church, the Donelson Church of Christ in Nashville for 6 months before moving to Portugal with their team, and their first daughter Abby was born during their time in Lisbon. Their second daughter Ellie was born in 2005, Alan finished his M.Div. in 2009, and their third daughter Katie was born in 2010. In 2014 Rachel began an MA in Historical Theology with Harding School of Theology, and the Howells spent the 2015-16 school year in the US serving as the Missionaries in Residence at Harding University.
